Pre-trip Advice
Species: Brown/
Rainbow trout and grayling.
Season:
Trout: Mid-April to Mid-October.
Grayling: Mid-June to Mid-March.
Tackle and Kit:
8 ft – 9ft rod 5/6# WF floating line. On some
smaller rivers and carriers a 7ft-8ft rod with a 3/4#weight
either W/F or double taper floating line – all
matched with reliable reels. Monofilament tapered leaders
(9ft) 2-6lb breaking strain, spare tippet material 2-6lb
(6x-2x). Knotless net, flotant, sinkants, clippers,
priest, fish bag, and waders if required. Prior to your
fishing trip we will advise on appropriate flies for
the time in question. All tackle can be provided by
prior arrangement.
Clothing:
No bright clothing – green or dark coloured shirts
are much less visible. Long sleeved shirts and long
lightweight trousers are best. Long peaked caps help
vision and safety. Polarised glasses are essential for
spotting fish easily and protect anglers from flies!
A pocketed fishing vest is useful and a waterproof coat
in case of showers.
Waders / Boots:
On some beats wading is necessary; on most, however,
we fish from the bank. Knee length wellingtons are fine
but on hot summer days a pair of waterproof lightweight
walking boots might be preferred.
Rod Licence:
By law when fishing in the UK, even when fishing on
private beats, each angler must carry a valid Environment
Agency rod licence (for coarse and non-migratory trout)
for the day they are fishing. They can be obtained on-line
www.postoffice.co.uk or by phoning 0844-8005386
Travel:
The Chalkstreams are located in Hampshire and Wiltshire
- from London around 1 hour’s drive. By train
just over an hour. We are able to collect rail travellers
from Winchester station and take rods directly to the
river and return them to the station. If staying at
a local hotel, we can collect rods and return them after
their day’s fishing.
Accommodation:
We can advise on a number of excellent Inns and Hotels
all close to the chalkstreams who specialise in accommodating
anglers.
